When Joy Walks Into the Room
A small hand reaches for yours. A laugh bounces off the walls. Suddenly, the world feels lighter — softer, kinder. For a fleeting moment, all the noise and responsibility of adult life fade, and what remains is something beautifully simple: a child’s uninhibited joy.
That natural, disarming joy became the heartbeat of They Make Life Sparkle, the latest single from my album Quiet. The piece reflects how children — simply by being themselves — can lift our spirits, calm our worries, and gently guide us back to what truly matters. It celebrates the irresistible charm of babies and toddlers: their innocence, their curiosity, and their unfiltered wonder.
The Story Behind the Music
In the original music video the music unfolds like a life story — beginning in simplicity, growing richer, then returning home.
It opens with a sober piano melody, intimate and contemplative, like the heartbeat of a new beginning. Soon, the viola and cello enter — two lovers in a silent conversation, finding harmony as they recognize their shared longing for a child.
As the piece grows, the full string quartet steps in, symbolizing how relationships deepen and expand over time.
Then the child arrives. The music lifts, shimmers, and celebrates the beautiful chaos they bring into the world. This is the musical equivalent of laughter — spontaneous, unpredictable, and full of light.
Gradually, the piece circles back to its opening melody. The piano closes the story with calm and tenderness, as if reflecting on how children eventually find their own paths while we carry the whispers of that early joy inside us.
It’s a small symphony of life: from stillness to laughter, and back again. A nod to the four seasons of our lives.
Why These Small Sparks Matter
In a world often weighed down by noise and uncertainty, They Make Life Sparkle offers a quiet reminder that gentleness still matters. It isn’t about ignoring hardship — it’s about remembering that joy and resilience coexist.
Many of my previous works, such as Submerged and Avoiding the Friction, explored empathy and endurance. This piece closes that circle by honoring what sustains both: hope, laughter, and love.
Children teach us that joy isn’t naive; it’s necessary. Their laughter is a kind of wisdom — a reminder that even in quiet times, life continues to shimmer.
We all know children make us happier — and science tells us why.
The baby-schema effect explains our instinctive response to youthful features like big eyes and round cheeks. These traits activate the brain’s reward system, releasing dopamine and oxytocin — the “feel-good” and “bonding” hormones.
Psychologists also talk about emotional contagion: our brains naturally mirror the emotions we see. When a child smiles, our facial muscles unconsciously mimic that expression, triggering the same happiness response inside us. Joy literally spreads through the body. And before we know it, even the most eloquent start speaking gibberish in high-pitched voices: “De-do-do-do, de-da-da-da.”
Then there’s Barbara Fredrickson’s broaden-and-build theory, which shows how positive emotions — even fleeting ones — expand our perspective, spark creativity, and help us recover from stress.
So when a toddler’s giggle makes you laugh, it’s not trivial. It’s neurological self-care — joy as medicine.
Here’s my invitation:
Next time you hear a child laugh — in a park, a children's daycare, a playground, through an open window — pause. Let that sound reach you. That small, fleeting moment is the world’s way of reminding you that hope is contagious.
Joy and tenderness are still within reach — if we allow them in.
From the Studio to the Soul
Recording They Make Life Sparkle with the Sun Sun Sun String Orchestra was as much about connection as composition. We recorded together — live, in the same room — letting eye contact and small gestures shape the phrasing. That spontaneity breathed warmth into the piece.
The piano leads with calm clarity. The strings respond like old friends, each with its own personality. Open harmonies and layered piano arpeggios mirror how joy enters quietly and then fills the space.
We left in tiny imperfections — breaths, bow sounds, the human traces that make the music feel alive. Because joy, like childhood, doesn’t need to be flawless. It just needs to be true.
They Make Life Sparkle was released on 20 November, World Children’s Day — a symbolic date for a piece that celebrates innocence, laughter, and the quiet magic children bring into our lives — but the message is timeless:
Cherish the small lights that brighten everyday life. Share it with someone who brings light into your world. Because sometimes, it only takes one laugh — or one melody — to make life sparkle again.
